PICTURE THIS #358 ~ CASTLES, PALACES OR MANORS

Congratulations, Pat, for the banner image that pictures a very nice composition.
Thanks, Anders, for the theme of your choice, though none of the three options would ever be one of my dreams...

THE CASTELLO DEI MONDI (PUGLIA - ITALY) CASTLE, PALACE, MANSION

THE ROYAL PALACE ( MADRID - SPAIN)
CASTLE, PALACE, MANSION

LA CASA DELLE CIVETTE (The House of Owls at Villa Torloni - Rome)CASTLE, PALACE, MANSION

  2. Hi Belita !! Very good choices for this week's theme. The castle in the first shot is of a fairly traditional design, although it's doesn't look very old. The royal palace in Madrid looks to be of a fairly similar design to that of Buckingham Palace in London. The 'House Of Owls' is a most intriguing place!! It seems to have been built of several different architectural designs added at different times.

    1. Hi Mitch! Believe it or not, the Castle dates from the XII century. It doesn't look very old because of the so-called Ostuni stone, which is characterized by its ivory-white colour. If you travel through Puglia you will always see ancient structures that don't look very old, though they are. I looked at that mansionn and I saw a magnificent piece of surreal architecture that seemed in parts out of place.... Your understanding about the different architectural designs is very correct. Actually, over the 8o years that followed its construction (1840) the building saw many additions..

  4. Hi Belita, what wonderful castles! The first is my favorite; it is hard to believe it is so old. The color of the Ostuni stone against the blue sky and the green is magnificent. I think I would like to live there and I wonder if any of my Sicilian forbears visited. The Royal Palace in Madrid does look royal and here again I love the colors. And finally La Casa Delle Civette is very charming. I wonder why it is called the house of the owls. Thank you for showing me Europe.
