PICTURE THIS #234 ~ SCULPTURES OR STATUES

Hi all, another great theme this week.  All my selected shots were taken on a visit to see Gator in Savannah, Georgia. The first on a night shoot in the middle of town and the other two at the Bonaventure Cemetary.

Bonaventure Cemetery is a public cemetery located on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah, Georgia.

The cemetery became famous when it was featured in the 1994 novel 'Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil' by John Berendt, and in the movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the book.

It is the largest of the city's municipal cemeteries, containing nearly 160 acres (0.65 km2).

  3. Hi Baz!! Three impressive shots for the theme!! The 'Night Fountain' is really beautiful. Night-time shots are something I'm just not very good at. I've seen the 'Bette Davis' shot before. I think it should be called 'Bette Davis Head', because it's not just the eyes but the whole head that looks like her. I did a double-take on the last shot, for a moment it looked like an Indian shrine. Then I saw the Spanish moss-covered trees and realised it had to be in the deep South :-)) It is beautiful though.

    1. Thanks Mitch I did some research after I took the bet Davis shot and it is thought the sculptor did in fact model it on her.

    2. Gator gave me a tutorial on night shooting and I do quite a lot now. Long exposure with a shut down lens (F 22), ISO 100 or lower, white balance for artificial light and a tripod are the essentials ;)

  6. Hi Baz, Magical scenes. And a thank you for the mini-lesson. I have heard Savannah is a beautiful city and you have done it great justice. My favorite is the bottom shot with the tropical growth and Spanish moss. Haunting, really.

  7. All three are gorgeous. Savannah is a special place (I miss it)! The Forsyth Fountain is not as easy to photograph as you would think...you certainly did it justice! The other two are fabulous as well...the bottom is my favorite!

  8. Hi Baz, It seems you captured the essence of Savannah. I remember reading Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. The night shot of the fountain is wonderfully done. I've never successfully photographed a subject in the evening. I love the statue of the woman. She definitely has Bette Davis eyes. The Bonaventure Monument is beautiful.
