Picture This #193 ~ SKY

Hi everyone, this is Mitch and I'll be your host for this week's challenge. Before we get to my theme, I'd just like to thank Benni for hosting last week. Her theme of 'Glass' was the most popular to date, with 17 members contributing.

My theme for this week is 'SKY'. It gives you a very wide range, you could use sunrises, sunsets, moon shots maybe.....dramatic cloud formations, sun-rays, rainbows, even birds or aircraft flying across the sky. The choice is yours!! Even though it's Easter, and maybe you have family get-together's or other special events planned, I still hope to see a lot of your fabulous photos again this week!!. As a special treat for Easter, you can post a bonus 4th photo if you wish. Here are mine:

1) A moody Spring sky.
Moody Spring

2) A glowing sunset behind an oil refinery.
Skyglow 2

3) An approaching storm front.
Storm Front

4) A hazy red sunset over the Cleddau River. Cleddau Sunset 2

    1. Happy Easter, Marianne!! Yes, Benni's shot has a lovely warm 'homey' feel. Just looks great as the banner. Sun is actually out here for a change, although there;s a bitingly cold wind blowing.

  4. Dramatic stormy sky in the first.

Love the burning liquid gold of the sunset in the second and the vividly red sun in the last one.

    1. Thanks Anders. Actually, the dramatic stormy shot is the third one!! The first one was just a typically dull cloudy and windy Spring day. Glad you liked the two sunset shots, they are two of my faves.

  8. They are all super good, but that approaching storm really does it for me. Action packed - what a photo for a horror story.

  9. Hi Mitch! I was in the sky (flying) all day Saturday and have been up to my ears unpacking since then. I thought I would reward myself by stopping in to Picture This and I am so glad I did. Thank you for using my beads as the banner, I am very honored. Your photos are marvelous! The first could be an illustration for the Great American Dust Bowl, with wheat beneath an ominous sky. I also love the golden one - oil refinery? No it's a magic city with high spires upon which the princess watches for her prince. I love your others as well, sea shores, storms and sunsets, just gorgeous.

I will try to post in a bit but also want to see the other pictures.

    1. HI Benni !! I did wonder, as you hadn't appeared, if you were travelling back, but couldn't remember what date you'd said. Nice to be home? I bet you're missing the warm weather!! Thanks for the lovely comments on my photos. I'll look forward to seeing your photos, too :-))

    1. Thanks Sue :-)) The storm-front is a fave of mine. It's rare to see such a well-defined storm-edge as that in this area. The last shot was part of a series I took. I'd seen the clouds picking up the colour about half hour before sunset, so went to a good vantage point and just shot a photo every couple of minutes til the sun had dropped below the horizon. This was my fave from that series.

  11. Mitch, all of your images are great. I like how the plants are silhouetted against the gray sky. It is a moody image.
The dramatic image is the third one of the approaching storm front. It's so predominant in the photo. The golden color in the oil refinery image is excellent. What filter did you use to give that effect? I like how you framed the shot with the tree branch on the left side. The sky in the last image seems layered with such warm colors.

    1. Thanks Robert, for your comments on my photos :-)) To answer your question about the third shot, no filter was used. I never use filters in my photography. I'm very much a 'basics' type of photographer. I also rarely do any post-shutter editing, apart from some cropping and sometimes, as in the storm front shot, conversion to B&W.

  12. Great shots, Mitch. That second one is incredible! I love the storm fornt and the hazy red one.

The first one would be my favorite way of looking at the sky...lying in a field of tall grasses.

    1. Thanks Debby :-)) I wouldn't have recommended lying in those grasses on that day, it was cold and damp!! LOL.
