Picture This #273 ~ All Things Maritime

Hi all. A great theme from Anders this week, thanks to Mitch for selecting my image for the header, have  a great weekend.

Here are my images for this week:

USS Yorktown.

The USS Yorktown (CV -10) was one of 24 Essex-class carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. Built in just 16.5 months, Yorktown was commissioned on April 15, 1943. Named after the American Revolutionary War’s Battle of Yorktown, she is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name.  Initially named Bon Homme Richard, she was renamed Yorktown while under construction to commemorate the USS Yorktown (CV-5), which was sunk during the epic Battle of Midway in June 1942. Like its namesake, the USS Yorktown (CV-10) was sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt.
The Yorktown was modified twice at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (SCB-27A 1951-53 and SCB-125 in 1955).  Yorktown’s service spanned three decades and included participation in WWII and the Vietnam War. The ship also recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule in December, 1968. In 1974, the Navy approved the donation of the Yorktown to Patriots Point and the ship was towed from Bayonne, NJ to Mount Pleasant, SC to become the nation’s first aircraft carrier museum.

  1. Hi, Baz, I am having some trouble posting comments, so I hope this goes through. First, let me say "congrats" on your wonderful banner shot. Your maritime pictures are great, from the huge USS Yorktown to the mooring bollard and rope, artfully done. A simple item which is fascinating and beautiful.

  4. Hi Baz!! Terrific shots for this week's theme. Wonderful shot of the Yorktown, a thing of power and beauty. Love that shot of the departing fishing fleet, but can't help but be reminded of the opening of 'The Perfect Storm'. My fave is the third shot....not just the impressive anchor, but the beautiful old stonework of the Customs House. Nice shot of the bollard and rope to finish with.

  6. Thanks for the history behind the first photo. It makes it so much more interesting to know some of the details. My favorite is the departing fishing boats. Another great POV!!! The anchor is cool! As is the mooring bollard and rope. Lots of the mooring bollards around NYC.
