PICTURE THIS #338 ~THE BIG PICTURE AND DETAILS

Congratulations, Pat, for the very original banner image!
Thanks, Anders, for the never-chosen-before theme!

The Chinese New Year, the year of the monkey, starts on Feb. 8, but yesterday and today the many thousands of Chinese living in Lisbon have already kicked off the celebrations. This afternoon, I happened to walk through a park where many Chinese were attending traditional performances.

Giving red envelopes is a custom at the Chinese New Year (I stopped just to take the photos but I believe the envelopes would be given to the children who were wearing traditional attires to perform Chinese dances)

Picture This #338 ~ The Big Picture And Details

What a great theme, Anders. I do not think we have ever had it before and it allows us to look at all the different elements in our subjects.

Wonderful banner shot by Pat, showing that everyday items have beauty.

Many thanks to Anders for hosting this week, and a really good theme, I like it a lot!!! Got me thinking  what subject to choose. In the end I went with one of the iconic buildings of the world: The Empire State Building.

1) The 'Big Picture' was actually the most difficult for this subject. Anyone who's visited New York knows that trying to photograph the entire building from ground level is almost impossible. I did, however, get this one on the upper part catching the colour of the sinking sun.

Thank for hosting Anders.

My draining stopper in the sink is famous, who would have thought. If I had suspected that this photo would become a suspected Pulitzer Prize winner, I would have cleaned the tea stains away before taking the photo.

If I had to do details of the local buildings it would mean a walk into town and creeping up closer to the objects in question. My only great achievements at the moment are views of the Alps from the local super market, and I am not visiting the Bernese Overland to climb the Eiger and get a closeup of a few death defying ravines and crevices. I decided to see what my home has to offer.

First of all my daily faithful companion - The Dyson vacuum cleaner.

Let's get a little closer to see what this wonderwork of modern house cleaning has to offer.

And even closer. I had to take this photo with my phone as I did not have time for the full enchilada this morning. Mr. Swiss did wonder what I was doing taking a photo of my vacuum cleaner.

PICTURE THIS #337 ~ STRANGE

Congratulations, Benni, for the very beautiful banner image!
Thanks, Pat, for the very interesting theme. At first, I thought I would skip this week, but then I changed my mind...

Who knows what this strange thing is? I saw it on a wall block at a pathway by the riverside. I have no idea at all what this is...

What a few hours here in the eastern US. Up north, snow and blizzard conditions. We have not escaped here down south as we have 40-50 mph wind bursts, taking out our power periodically.

This is such a fun theme, Pat! Great idea. And, I thank you for using my fish as the banner picture.

Ok, here are my three.

Skull
Found on the beach. A little research identified it as a top sail catfish skull. About 8" or 20 cm long.

Many thanks to Pat for hosting this week. A great theme, that should produce some really interesting photos!! I like taking 'strange' shots.....either strange things I've seen, or everyday objects from strange angles!!

Here are a few of mine:

1) While visiting the monastery island of Caldy, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales, I spotted this huge old rusty tank lying on it's side. It sort of reminded me of an abandoned rocket from an old Flash Gordon serial.

2)  I call this one 'Reflected Wisdom'. The front of the Millenium Centre, in Cardiff, Wales, has two sayings, one English, one Welsh, in huge letters on the front of the building. This is part of the Welsh saying reflected in the mirrored fountain-tower opposite it.

Picture This #337 ~ Strange

Pat calling from somewhere in the middle of Europe. The title is "strange" so I leave the rest up to you. I have discovered lately that taking photos on the spur of the moment, usually with my iPhone, is not a bad solution. I blog quite a lot and do not always have the time to spend with getting everything perfect. Now and again I take too many photos and some of them are here with this theme - so let's begin

I was cleaning the kitchen and noticed how nice and  shiny the base to my kitchen mixer was. I even left the wiping cloth on the table to prove it was a moment of work.

And then there was the thing that is over the drainage in the sink - it was before I had completely cleaned it so there are still a few tea stains on it - the natural look.

And then I came across this last week whilst I was actually looking for something else. It is the side view of a pew in the St. Urs cathedral in Solothurn, Switzerland.

And I just had to include these two gentlemen. Taken in our supermarket where they were advertising that you can now shop until 6.00 p.m. on Saturday - it used to be 4.00 p.m. I had to laugh. When they realised I was going to take a photo they got rid of the people interrupting my picture and both stood there and posed for the photo.

PICTURE THS #336 ~ STATUES OR SCULPTURES

Nice banner shot by Mitch... I really love this week's theme...

Ladies first and this one is named Pepita Jimenez, the muse of the Spanish sculptor Juan Valera (Madrid)

Gregos is a French-born artist, whose sculptured faces are seen in  Paris, mainly. However, we can find them in many cities scattered all over the world. Each face is a sort of self-portrait of the day to express his humours... The one you see pictured below ( I would say looking concerned or in bad mood), was on the wall of the building next to the hotel where I stayed recently in Madrid.
