Picture This #241 ~ Extraordinary Weather

Many thanks to Baz for hosting this week. A great theme he's chosen. If there's one thing everyone likes to talk about (and photograph), it's the weather!!! It has been a record-breaking winter in many parts of the world. Here in the UK, it's been the wettest winter on record. That being said, I didn't take a single photo of any of the storms we had, so all my shots are from my archive!!

1) Storm Front At Amroth. Anyone who saw those extraordinary photos of the storm front over Sydney, Australia recently will see that this was a similar front, just on a smaller scale.

2) Desert Road Heat-Haze. Heat is not something that's easy to photograph, but the heat-haze rising from this road in the Mojave gives an idea of the scorching temps!!

3) Baby, It's Cold Outside. Frost on a wooden post. This was taken in 2009, when the area I live in had it's coldest winter for quite a while. Temps were -13C (8.6F). Not as cold as some places get, but rare for here.

4) Getting Wet. Anyone who's been to Florida will know that spectacular thunderstorms can appear seemingly out of nowhere, and disappear almost as quickly. The wildlife are used to it, and just wait it out.

  1. Dramatic sky

    Terrific shot of the road

    ...but Mitch really must go...

Poor birds, but I suppose they're used to it

    1. Yes, the birds are used to it. They make no effort to seek shelter. They just stand there waiting for it to finish.

  2. Hi Mitch! Great pix! Magnificent clouds in the first one, I have seen clouds like that, they are almost frightening. Indeed you have captured "heat" in your photo of the Mojave. You have the haze and the shimmering road. What interesting frost, and you are right, those temperatures are unusual for Wales. My favorite is the herons in the rain, absolutely amazing. And you are right, Florida rainstorms come on quickly and hard.

  3. I love the first one, appeals to my dark side. the road is quite impressive, I have seen those heat waves rising from the concrete making everything look a little distorted. frost is something normal in my area, a very good capture.Poor birds, now my felines would not like florida, I am sure.

    1. Thanks Pat. If your felines don't think thunder and lightning, then Florida is definately not the place for them!!

  6. I must say I am glad to have not seen clouds like the first photo close up Mitch, if at all. You did manage to capture the heat waves, and would you believe we have a Desert Road here too! Funny enough I don't mind getting caught in the rain so long as it is not cold. Glad the birds are used to it. :)

  7. Love that first shot of the clouds, Mitch! That second one reminds me of when we were kids on summer vacation and spotting mirages on the pavement ahead of the car.

The frost crystals on the post are very dramatic.

That last one of the birds in the downpour is my favorite!
