Picture This #256 ~ Roads Or Rails

Great theme, Pat, it's rainy here today so I thought I'd post early.

Amtrak, Niles
Train station, Niles, Michigan. I wish I knew its history.

Green tractor
A picture I did for the theme "green" on another site long ago. I was just going to get the trees but then this green tractor drove by. The driver was delighted when he saw me, note no hands on the steering wheel.

Redbud
Blue Ridge Mountains with Redbud blooming. I had to take it from the car as once my husband gets driving he does not stop.

  1. The architecture of railway stations is so interesting. Love that building.Who needs hands on a steering wheel, would only spoil the great capture on the picture. I know that feeling of snapping when the driver is driving, but a rewarding photo.

    1. Thank you, Belita. Debby has done what I should have done, and given a bit of the history below. It's one of my favorite places.

  9. The train station is beautiful, Benni. I had to look up the history. Here's a bit of what I found :

Time was when the conductor’s cry, “Niles, next stop” sent the train passengers scurrying to one side of the coaches. They wanted a glimpse of the Neo-Romanesque style Michigan Central Rail Road depot, the most outstanding structure on the line. Completed in 1892, it was ready for passengers traveling to the Chicago World’s Fair “Columbian Exposition,” in 1893.

To create a showplace on the property, the MCRR hired John Gipner, an experienced German gardener. The Daily Star-Sun reported there was “a large park with greenhouses, where bouquets are grown by the thousands and each lady passenger is given one as a reminder that the MCRR line is a splendid line for a traveler, and as a sweet remembrance of Niles; hence our beautiful city is spoken of happily throughout the land.”

Love the JD cruising down the street!

I can't see the last photo. It says it's currently unavailable. :(

    1. Debby, thanks for doing what I have always wanted to do, look up the history of the Niles train station. Thanks!

I don't know what happened to my third picture, it has disappeared from my Flickr account as well. I'll have to look into that.
