Picture This #207 ~ Cemeteries, Crypts, Headstones

Congratulations to Sue for Photo of the Week.

Joanne, you selected a good theme for our challenge. Cemeteries are good subjects. I did go through my files and found several images that are suitable. I included something monumental that reflects the achievement of the deceased.

This is a scene from our town's burial ground. Some of the deceased buried here were the original settlers. This group of headstones are in a family plot.

These headstones are in Salem's Burial Ground. The writing on the stones are eroding with time. They may date back to the 17th century.

This crypt is in Saint Apollonaire in Ravenna , Italy. The religious motifs on the front made this an interesting subject.

Michelangelo's Tomb in Santa Croce, Florence, Italy.

  1. Hi Robert !! Great entries for Joanne's theme!! I really like the dappled sunlight falling on the headstones in the first two shots. The sarcophagus in the third shot is really heavy and ornate, but beautifully crafted. Of course the final shot shows a tomb befitting such a famous artist.

  2. Wonderful images, Robert. That lovely old graveyard has a regal feel about it. Love the dappled light myself, really mysterious and almost a holy feel to it.

    1. Thank you, Benni. Both cemeteries have trees. They do contribute to that effect.

  5. Lovely collection of graveyard pictures and tombs. The Italian ones are almost art studies. the local burial ground is very interesting and Salem is naturally bound with mystery (and witches?)

    1. You are right about Salem. This photo was taken in October. Michelangelo's tomb was a postcard photo for me. It is something to view and remember that I was there. Thank you, Pat.

  7. I'm so sorry for taking so long to comment on your beautiful photos, Robert. I love the way the shadows and light play on the headstones in your Salem shots, the crypt is absolutely beautiful, and I had no idea that Michaelangelo had such an ornate tomb. All beautiful shots, and again, I apologize for being so late.

    1. Thanks Joanne for your comments. I was drawn to the shadows and light play on those Salem shots.I wish that my shot of Galileo's tomb was a sharp. His tomb is across the aisle in that church. No apology is necessary.

    1. Thank you. Such a tomb had to be built for the artist who sculpted, painted, and designed.
