PICTURE THIS #208 ~ HOLIDAYS, VACATIONS, TRIPS

here are my contributions to the theme:-

HOLIDAYS, VACATIONS, TRIPS

We managed a couple of days off this year, very unusual for us, to be able to leave home, thank you to darling daughter Melissa for house sitting for us, so we could steal some time away.

 1. Watching the River Rafting on The Vaal River, Parys in March 2013. Fun to see for Parys Fun Day, but alas like the sky diving and balloon trips, something to observe, take photographs, but definitely not participate in. Seems like this lot was having problems down the river, it was a bit shallow and they kept on getting stuck.

Parys Town and The Vaal River are popular outings for Johannesburgers, only 1 hour away http://www.parys.info/discoverparys_vaalriver.htm

Holidays, Vacations, Travels2.

Just simply lazy days with a good friend, reading a book, drinking a glass of wine, enjoying the view over the lake at Big Creek Lodge, Magaliesberg, in May 2013

3. Amanzimtoti is a coastal town just south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. According to local legend, when the Zulu king Shaka led his army down the south coast on a raid against the Pondos in 1828, he rested on the banks of a river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed "Kanti amanzi mtoti" (isiZulu: "So, the water is sweet"). The river came to be known as Amanzimtoti ("Sweet Waters"). The Zulu word for "sweet" is actually mnandi, but, as Shaka's mother had the name Nandi, he invented the word toti to replace mnandi out of respect not to wear out her name. Locals frequently refer to the town as "Toti"

June 2013, on our trip down to see our first newborn granddaughter.

  1. You certainly have plenty of choice with water in Suid Afrika. I did river rafting once, but it was all nicely organised - quite fun, but can be a little dangerous You have caught it well on the photo. Relaxing by the lake and sea, and all due to a Zulu (they were the tall ones I think).

    1. Thank you Pat, I enjoy water, it is so relaxing, we have 2 ponds in the garden, one with fountain and waterfall the other just a fountain rolling over stones, I love it, they are on constantly, the tingle of water drowns out the noise of traffic from the highway, one block away.

  2. Hi Marianne!! Being different once again I see. I assumed you'd add your photos to your first post!! How wrong could I be? :-))

That river-rafting looks fun. I've always wanted to go on a white-water rafting trip down the Colorado River. It's on my 'bucket list'. That place in the second shot certainly looks peaceful and relaxing. The beach in the third shot is lovely, and not too crowded either, which is always a good thing.

    Congrats, bedstemor :-))

    1. Hah, Mitch, by now you should know not to assume anything where I am concerned *grins* Don't you just love surprises ?

It was fun to watch, but you are not getting me in that boat for sure. I hate crowds, so always seem to sneak of somewhere quiet by myself.

Thank you, at least they are so far away I won't have to baby sit, at least not often. LOL

  3. My favorite without a doubt is your granddaughter, very precious!! I also love Amanzimtoti; what a lovely shot with sand, water and the modern buildings in the background. I do not do things like water rafting which might involve sudden total wetness. But you've captured those brave rafters very well as well as the serenity of your middle picture.

    1. Thank you Benni, I am so pleased with the way I caught her first meeting with her grandfather and at only 3 weeks old, she is very alert. I have seen new pics of her now from her mother at 7 weeks, she has started laughing. Her father is quite the clown and she adores him, making funny faces.

I only get wet in showers and safe swimming pools, so we are on the same page here. Hugs.

  7. No Crocs in those waters. But looks like it would be fun. I would have chosen your view point as well. Congrats on the wonderful Granddaughter also.

    1. Nope no crocs on that specific stretch as the river winds further south and then east, there is crocs in the waters. Too cold up here for them.

  8. Marianne, that's a great capture of the people navigating through those rocks. I would want to just observe them too. The second image suggests a restful place.
Thanks for sharing with us the history of the Zulus.
Congratulations of the birth of yor granddaughter, Teagan Anne. Beautiful image of her cradled in someone's arms.

  9. Thank you so much Robert for your kind words. The choice when speaking travels are many but I opted for Holiday, think I will soon need another one to go see little one. That is my husband, Russell, who has just met his first grandchild for the first time. I think I captured the wonder in her eyes of: " who is this new person in my life?
