PICTURE THIS #208 ~ HOLIDAYS, VACATIONS, TRIPS

Hi all,
Travel has always been a passion of mine, when I checked back in to my archive, I started taking travel images in March 2001; when I visited Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains, NY State.

Since that time I have met many fellow photographers including Mitch and have numerous travel adventures.

Choices were hard for this Theme as I have over 25,000 images categorized at "Travel" LOL!

I decided to go for pot luck and popped a word into search and these were the first 3 images on the list.

As it happens they are some of my favourite travel moments and all shots I have not used before.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend;)

The Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC,  USA.

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honour the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. across from the Washington Monument. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor of the primary statue – Abraham Lincoln, 1920 – was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. Dedicated in 1922, it is one of several monuments built to honour an American president.

The Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia, USA

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. This province consists of northern and southern physiographic regions, which divide near the Roanoke River gap. The mountain range is located in the eastern United States, starting at its southernmost portion in Georgia, then ending northward in Pennsylvania. To the west of the Blue Ridge, between it and the bulk of the Appalachians, lies the Great Appalachian Valley, bordered on the west by the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian range.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are noted for their bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the "blue" in Blue Ridge, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their distinctive color.

Within the Blue Ridge province are two major national parks: the Shenandoah National Park in the northern section and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the southern section. The Blue Ridge also contains the Blue Ridge Parkway, a 469-mile (755 km) long scenic highway that connects the two parks and is located along the ridge crestlines with the Appalachian Trail._A050024 (2)

Lake Superior, The Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA

Lake Superior frozen solid all the way across to Canada. Marci and I spent a wonderful week exploring The Upper Peninsula of Michigan which is the northern of the two major land masses that make up the US state of Michigan. It is commonly referred to as the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) and Upper Michigan.

It is also known colloquially as the land "above the Bridge" linking the two peninsulas. The peninsula is bounded on the north by Lake Superior, on the east by the St. Marys River, on the southeast by Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and on the southwest by Wisconsin.

The Upper Peninsula contains 29% of the land area of Michigan but just 3% of its total population. Residents are frequently called Yoopers (derived from "U.P.-ers") and have a strong regional identity. Large numbers of Finnish, Swedish, Cornish, and Italian immigrants came to the Upper Peninsula, especially the Keweenaw Peninsula, to work in the area's mines.

The peninsula includes the only counties in the United States where a plurality of residents claim Finnish ancestry.

  2. Wonderful travel memories, you have here, Baz and I am sure you have lots more as you are indeed very travelled. You should make a plan to bring Marci to South Africa for a visit, you know you would be most welcome both of you.

Thank you for sharing your shots and thank you for taking part.

    Hugs

  3. 3 very good photos - for pot luck very good. that is an impressive statue of Lincoln, like the Blue Ridge mountains and the lake of Michigan where you can feel the coldness by just looking at the ice.

  4. Hi Baz!! As soon as I saw the theme I know you'd like it and that you'd also have trouble deciding which shots to use!!! LOL.

Three great choices. The detail and lighting on the Lincoln statue is just superb!! The sunset over the Blue Ridge mountains is beautiful. A great shot of you and Marci to finish (or should that be Finnish?) :-))

  5. Magnificent picture of the Lincoln Monument! Wow. Love the Blue Ridge at sundown and you and Marci in front of frigid Superior. I've know many a Yooper and loved them all. Those of us who live in the lower peninsula are often called "trolls" because we live "under the bridge".

  8. Baz, I can see that you enjoy traveling. You also wrote descriptive backgrounds that accompany your images. Lincoln Memorial in DC has to be the most impressive site there. I remember visiting it at night when it is illuminated. Your image of Abe is tack sharp.
I learned something now on why causes the Blue Ridge Mountains to be blue. Most impressive capture of the sunset with the three plants in the foreground.
Great photo of you and Marci.
