Picture This #229 ~ Curves

I just very recently acquired a new camera and I am excited about using it. Sadly I have been spending more time using it than studying the manual. These are three of my first pictures and I can see that I will need to practice the tech end.
Also, it is wicked cold here and quite dark. So these are all indoor shots.

One of my more interesting pieces, I got it from a small curio shop. The owner said he bought it as part of a lot at an estate sale. It looks Oriental, is very heavy, and is exquisitely carved with curves. Guesses welcome.

Also, thank you so much for choosing my little lily leaf as banner picture.

  1. Congratulations, Benni, for your new 'toy'! I'm sure it will give you many hours of great pleasure along with excellent shots. Love the composition in the 1st photo. Nice teak screen (from India?). The interesting piece in the 3rd shot, it seems to be made out of soap stone or of the so-called jade root, both stones very common in Asia, particularly in China, where I saw bigger and smaller pieces similar to yours. It could be a dog. Oriental people often represent animals in a way different from ours, as they introduce mythological features that are unfamiliar to Westerners.

    1. Thank you, Belita. I hope, as I learn the tech aspect, that I will feel more at ease in using my camera, which is a Nikon DSLR. Quite a nice toy and I must discipline myself to use it to its full advantage.

I think you are right about the third photo, jade or jade root, and an interesting dog or a mythological character. I'd love to know its history. Thank you again for your kind words.

  4. Hi Benni !! Glad to hear you're having fun exploring your new camera. I really like the combination of lace and glass in the first shot, looks like one becomes the other seamlessly. Beautiful teak screen, love the colour. My guess for the third shot would be soapstone. Lovely carving work.

  9. Hi Benni. Congrats on your gorgeous banner shot - its truly well-deserved! I'm loving all three of your shots, especially the shot of the lace. What kind of camera did you get?? I found that if I read the manuals for my cameras I got totally confused! I'm so much better at trial and error - and there's been a lot of errors!

    1. Joanne, I got a Nikon DSLR 5200. The manual is somewhat straight forward, but perhaps written by someone who is not too good at explaining.

  10. That first shot is lovely, Benni. I'm sure you'll love your new camera. Best of luck with the shots. I haven't learned everything there is too know about my newest camera either. I usually just use the automatic scene recognition, and leave it at that.

The teak screen is nice....love the deep, rich color.

Love your curiosity shop find. It has lovely curves. Is it a goat?

    Your banner photo is beautiful!

    1. Thanks, Debby. It could be a dog or a goat. But it has a horn. And, apparently, scales.

Every time I pick up the manual, it just seems so confusing I put it down. But some things I really do need to know.
