Hello "Picture This". I'm Debby Van Enkenvoort and I'll be your host for this week. Thank you, Belita for last week's theme. We had a lot of great entries and it was so much fun going through them. Today I was thinking of a story that I loved as a child and I'm sure you've all heard versions of it.
In the folktale "Stone Soup" some travelers come to a village carrying nothing more than an empty
cooking pot. Upon their arrival the villagers are unwilling to share
any of their food stores with the hungry travelers. Then the travelers
go to a stream and fill the pot with water, drop a large stone
in it, and place it over a fire. One of the villagers becomes curious
and asks what they are doing. The travelers answer that they are making
"stone soup", which tastes wonderful, although it still needs a little bit of garnish
to improve the flavor, which they are missing. The villager does not
mind parting with a few carrots to help them out, so that gets added to
the soup. Another villager walks by inquiring about the pot, and the travelers again mention their stone soup which has not reached its full
potential yet. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning
to help them out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another
ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed
by all.
I don't have a picture of a stone or the first carrots since my carrots are ready to be tossed, so I'm offering up egg noodles. I'll be back with more later. This is just to get the soup started. I'm putting it over the fire now, so just toss something in! And bring your friends! No veggies or meat? Then a bottle of wine will help slake our thirst! Or beer! Or whatever you have...bring it!
Fantastic choice of theme, Deb! We have that stone soup typical in Lisbon suburban area. There are restaurants well-known for the stone soup they serve. I myself don't like it but I'll be very pleased to contribute to a very substantial soup. Give me some time to go to the market...
