    1. Thanks, Anders. It does look like it could be a buried elk. It was about 6 feet (2 meters) high.

  3. That is some kind of Ibis? looks so comical wet like that and the angle you took it makes the beak look even more enormous.
Wonderful shot of the flowers, we have them here too.
You are lucky you can escape winter, wish I had a winter home to escape to when the cold gets too much on the Highveld.
Anders is right, looks like the horns of an Elk that driftwood. Love it.

    1. Hi Marianne, that's a stork and the beak really is that enormous. It seems like the bird should tip over under its weight. It looks a lot better in flight. You are the first person ever to recognize the white bird-of-paradise; it's a plant in the same family as the familiar orange one, but grows in a tall tree.

I do indeed feel lucky to be able to escape. This has been a brutal winter.

  4. Hi Benni !! Three excellent choices for this week's theme!! That irst shot is such a familiar sight from when I've visited Florida. The big bird in the foreground is a Wood Stork. A really odd bird......a really ugly head with a huge beak stuck on a fine body with long legs. The bird just behind it, giving itself a good shake, is a Snowy Egret. Lovely flowers in the second shot, they do appear to be a drab relation to the Bird-Of-Paradise. That's one BIG piece of driftwood in the last shot. Must have been a BIG storm that ripped that up from it's original location.

  5. Thanks, Mitch, I do so love that cute egret shaking itself. And thanks for the name of the stork; I knew it was one, just not what kind. Glad you liked the pix.

  11. I Benni, I love the shot of the stork. The bird of paradise flower is lovely. My favorite is the driftwood on the lake's shore. Nature does its own sculpturing.
