Picture This #238 ~ BIG!!

Congratulations to Baz for his photo selected for this week's banner.
I like the theme chosen for this week. BIG holds many possibilities.

Here is what I selected.

The northeastern part of the States has been bombarded with 13 snowstorms since the beginning of the winter season. Here is a photo of two tables on my patio. We're not dining outdoors this season.

My next photo is a landmark in the heart of the Yale University Campus. This is the Harkness Tower. It has a carillon that plays daily. It's a good example of neo-Gothic architecture.

I thought of several subjects that will match our theme. I found this image of the battleship USS Olympia docked in Philadelphia. This battleship was commissioned during the Spanish-American War. You see the comparison next to the submarine.

  1. Hi Robert!! Three great shots for this week's theme!! I've been getting regular updates on all the snowstorms over there, it's a real mess. The weather this winter on both sides of the Atlantic have been worse than usual. Here in the UK we've had (and continue to have) the wttest winter on record. Your first photo demonstrates your winter very well!! Lovely shot of the Harkness Tower. I was really interested in the last shot. The battleship seems to be in excellent condition considering it's age. Has it had major renovation work?

  2. Hi Mitch, to answer your question about the battleship, it was recently featured in the media. It needs a lot of work and will probably have to be towed and dry docked.
I saw on the network news about the Thames flooding. I know you are in Wales. It's been a record setting winter for the whole northern hemisphere.

  3. Now we know where the snow has gone. good capture, it looks like two cars. Like the tower very much and that battle ship is really something special.

    1. Yes, Pat, I believe we have more snow than towns and villages in Switzerland. Yale University is a mix of architecture. Some of the residence halls or colleges are in neo-Classical and some of them are in neo-Gothic. There is a treasure of buildings to photograph there.

  4. Wow that is one big drift.

    Beautiful and impressive tower

They sure could build them on those days.

    1. Thanks, Anders. There was a big building project going on during the Great Depression. The University modeled itself on the British universities Oxford and Cambridge. That was a big drift on my patio.

  5. Hi Robert! f I hadn't read your explanation about the first photo, I would have believed they were two cars and never two tables... good choice for BIG in the other two shots...

  7. Wow, Robert, that is some snow. It is difficult to photograph heavy snow and really show it off but you have done the job very well. The carillon and Harkness Tower is wonderful; it's nice we have some lovely architecture over here. And the ship is quite interesting both to me and my boat/ship loving husband as eel.
