Picture This #202 ~ Rocks

Hi Anders, you selected a good theme. All of the themes are open to interpretation. I believe what I have is right for this theme.
My first entry is something that I found unusual. We were at the Chapel in Sedona when I noticed this vegetation growing in this furrow between the rock.

Still in Sedona, I awakened early for the sunrise. This is my shot of the first sunlight on the rocks.

The last photo is taken on a hike. There used to be a rock quarry many years ago until residents petitioned to stop the quarrying. This is now part of a state park. See how the tree's roots cling to the side.

  1. Beautiful line of green in all that ocra-coloured rock.

    Impressive mountain wall.

Just shows that live things will conquer any place left on its own.

  3. Hi Robert !! Three great shots for Anders' theme. I really like that first shot. I'm assuming there are at least periodic flows of water in that channel, thus prompting the growth of the vegetation. Lovely shot of the early-morning sun on the rocks at Sedona. The nearest I got to Sedona on my recent Arizona trip was Montezuma's Castle National Monument. Amazing how trees can find root in such inhospitable places. It almost looks like it is attempting to pull itself free!!

    1. There was a tiny flow of water in that channel. It was a little chilly that morning waiting for the sun to rise. I stayed in the car for awhile. I wanted to get the sun rise on Bell Rock but I was pleased to see how the sunlight fell on the rock behind me. That tree does seem to pull itself free. Thank you.

  4. Robert, amazing shots!! Your first one looks like a flower waterfall, very nice with the green against the red/orange rock. The second is magnificent, you caught the light just right!! What a great example, in your third, of the persistence of nature.

    1. Thank you Benni for your comment. I wish to return to that quarry site in another season. This was shot in the winter. It would be good to see the tree with foilage.

  6. Wonderful photos, Robert. I love the first one with the cactus and flowers growing along the fissure.

The canyon shot is pretty. I love the sunshine and shadows you captured.

The last one is my favorite! Clinging to life with all one's might!

    1. Thank you, Debby. How I wished that I could make the last image more stunning. This was taken in the winter. I hope to return when it's another season. The terrain is rocky and I would prefer someone to accompany me. I love the cactus and the flowers in an unusual place.

  7. Very interesting different shots, Robert. I love them all, but the first one really caught me. Amazing how little soil it takes to make something grow, seemingly right out the rock face. Lovely capture.

Had to use Google to figure out where you were.Arizona is surely beautiful, they took me right on a tour there. What a lovely place for a serene vacation.

    1. Marianne, Sedona is beautiful. I'm glad you went on a virtual tour of it. There was a trickle of water coming down that fissure. Thank you for your comment.

    1. Don't they resemble hearts? I take photos and don't know when I'll have an opportunity to show them. If it wasn't for our theme of Rocks in Picture This, this photo wouldn't be shared.
      Thank you.

  10. The life stream is awesome for showing how strong mother nature is when it comes to life and the Ideal placements. With her, there is none, she makes them work in the craziest places. The color contrast in the photo is the real winner here. I really like the lighting and the tones. Very nice shot and capture.
The red rocks of sedona, do just that. They rock! Love the colors and layers of color in them. I have only seen but a small portion as I drove through, but can see that each day could be filled with so many great views to capture.
The last looks really like the tree is moving on in tree time. Getting up and walking out of there.
    Nice captures for the theme.

    1. Thank you Randall for your critique on the first photo. I thought it was a very striking contrast with the rocks. The tree does seem that it will walk away.
