Picture This #204 ~ I Wonder

Thank you Belita for hosting this week's theme. Photography can capture moments that involve the viewer. Henri Cartier Bresson captured life what he called "decisive moment."

Here are my entries for our theme.

This photo was taken on our Italian tour a few years ago. My wife and I walked through the streets of Maiori and came across this group of women reciting the rosary. I took this photo and when I viewed it after I uploaded it, I noticed the young girl in the corner of the photo. It seemed that she may have been thinking of something else.

My next photo is a man portraying a person living in the 19th Century. He was recruiting African-Americans to join the Union Army during the Civil War. He was probably waiting for a tourist to play his role.

My last photo is my encounter with the ice cream vendor on a Manhattan street. We were engaged in a conversation. I told her that I haven't seen a Mr. Softee ice cream truck in years. She was wondering if I was going to buy a cone.

  1. Wonderful shots all three.

    Indeed so it seems.

    Great and cool idea.

    "What'll you have?"

    1. Thank you, Anders. She was trying to convince me to buy an ice cream. It was a cool and wet day. She probably wasn't doing a lot of business.

    2. You're welcome, Robert. :) Indeed that is probably the case.

  2. HI Robert!! Three good shots for the theme. I wonder what the girl had seen? She looks shocked or amazed. I wonder how long the man in the second shot had to wait for a tourist to join in the recreation? I'm wondering why the ice-cream vendor appears to be dressed like a peace-protester? LOL. Aren't they supposed to wear white uniforms?

    1. Mitch, you pose some good questions from these photos. The only possible answer that I can offer is on the ice cream vendor. It was a cool and wet day. She seemed to be dressed warmly.

  3. How nice to see you, Robert, taking part in the challenge with three good contributions. I wonder that girl was feeling bored and lonely by herself, even if she was together with other people but not of her age... That man on the street has a very intriguing expression... I wonder if selling ice-cream was that girl's regular job...most probably,not...

    1. Belita, I cropped the photo with the women praying the rosary because there was another girl partially hidden by a post. It seemed distracting and I wanted to emphasize the girl with her head turned on an angle. The man cast in a period costume was interesting. I didn't engage him in conversation. I observed him without him noticing me. The girl selling ice cream could be a part time job. Let's imagine that she came to New York to work in the theater. She had a few auditions and is hoping that one day she will get a role.

  4. I wonder why they are saying the rosary in that particular place?
    A very expressive face.
I wonder why the ice cream vendor is so scary looking?
Three good shots for the theme

    1. It seemed that the women were sitting in a cafe praying the rosary. It was unfamiliar to me. We happened to walk by and I wanted to capture the moment.
So, you think the ice cream vendor is scary looking. She tried coaxing me to buy one. We were on our way to a matinee. Thanks.

  5. Robert, thanks for 3 great shots. That top one is indeed an interest. She has seen or thought of something that has escaped the others. Nice job. I like the middle one, a bit of history. And the bottom is a great portrait of a great American tradition. With a Facebook logo! Are they (FB) everywhere? I guess so.

    1. Thanks, Benni. Yes, Facebook is everywhere. I didn't spot the FB logo on the truck until you mentioned it. I found the man portraying a 19th century freed man interesting.

  6. They are three photos out of the ordinary. Never seen anyone reading the rosary or whatever, the artist is an interesting type and the ice cream van is just what I could use now on a hot summer evening.

    1. Hi Pat. The day we were in NYC was wet and cool so it wasn't a day for ice cream. The vendor tried to sell me an ice cream treat. Couldn't make a sale. I found the women praying interesting. You seldom see people praying publicly.

  7. I love the candid shots, and the girl, well she might have just gotten a quick view of you and your camera.

    1. Randall, I asked if I could photograph her but she insisted that I buy ice cream. I considered buying one but we just ate lunch. Thank you.

  8. Very nice shots, ROberts. I had to laugh at that last one. I can imagine a line of kids waiting for an ice cream when the kid at the head of the line can't make up his mind!

    1. Actually Debby, she didn't have any customers at the time. She wanted to make me a customer.
