Picture This #213 ~ Views Of My Local Landscape

Many thanks to Baz for hosting this week's challenge!! A great theme, that everyone should have photos for!!

It's nearly impossible to have a local landscape where I live that doesn't feature water in some way. I live in the far west of Wales, on the peninsula that juts out into the Irish Sea, so the area is surrounded on three sides by ocean. It is bisected down the middle by the Cleddau River and there are also several lakes and millponds.

Surprisingly, my first shot DOESN'T feature any water. It's the view across the fields from my window at home.

My second shot is of the magnificent sea-cliffs of the St Govan's Headlands, about 5 miles from where I live.
Sea Cliffs 1

My third shot is of the scrub-land near the sea-cliffs, where you can usually find semi-wild ponies grazing, along with sheep. On this day you can see a big snowstorm approaching.

Sorry, couldn't resist adding a bonus shot. This is sunset over Broad Haven Bay.

  5. Ceertainly destroys the idea that Wales is full of coal mines, miner's attached houses and slopes everywhere. You live in a wonderful place with a great scene from your house. I think I miss the sea most of all in Switzerland, again a beautiful view of the cliff and the scrubland above, although it doesn't look so scrubby to me.

    1. Thanks Pat :-)) The part of Wales I live in was never really part of the Welsh industrial boom of the previous centuries, that was further East, centered around Cardiff, Swansea and the valleys of South Wales between those two cities. The main industry in these parts has always been centred around the sea. But even in the formerly industrial areas, great changes have taken place over the last twenty years. Both Cardiff and Swansea have gone through a lot of redevelopment and regeneration and are now better known as tourist destinations.

  6. What a view you have from home! lucky you!

The cliffs are amazing. Do you find many birds nesting there?

I'd love to see the wild ponies! How are they semi-wild? Does someone own them? That's a wonderful shot of the snow clouds. I don't think I've ever seen a snow storm approaching. The sky seems blanketed with clouds when it snows, but I've never seen them creep up on us.

That last shot is truly magnificent.

    1. Thanks Debby :-)) Those sea-cliffs are home to many seabirds. ax well as the usual collection of several varieties of gull, there are quite few others....cormorants are quite common here. A couple of miles further up the coast there is even an island with a colony of Puffins.

The ponies are owned, but they are left to graze the heath/scrubland near the sea-cliffs for most of the year. You can see in the third photo that there are fences to keep the sheep from wandering too close to the cliffs.

Photos 2- 4 were all taken on the same day, New Year's Day 2010. It started off a beautifully clear winter's day, but very slowly that snow storm crept across the sky. In the last shot, the outer edges were just passing overhead, so the clouds at the leading edge created that beautiful sunset. A few minutes later the snow started to fall and we had to head back home rather quickly!!!

  7. Fabulous view from your house, captured with the light showing the greens and golds. Your second picture is a heart-stopper. I think I would be going there all the time to just sit and dream. The clouds and sunset are also very beautiful; it that where you and Joanne took the pictures of the white ponies with the rainbow? Just magnificent.

    1. Thanks Benni :-)) That area around the sea-cliffs is a favourite of mine. I go there several times a year. Yes, what a good memory you have!! That is exactly where we photographed the ponies and the rainbow!! In fact it was on the very day that photos 2- 4 were taken!! Actually I called it a snowbow, because it appeared ahead of the snowstorm that was approaching in the third shot.
