Picture This #214 ~ Person, Place And Thing

Many thanks to Debby for hosting this week. A really good theme, it lets us show different types or styles of photo within the same theme.

I decided to go back further into my archive for this theme, rather than using recent shots. All my photos for this theme were taken back in 2008 when I was still using just a small point and shoot camera. I also decided to follow Debby's example and use mainly B&W shots (you don't have to use B&W though). These are all old favourites of mine, and you may have seen them before, so apologies if you have.

1) PERSON. This shot is called 'No Worries'. It's my favourite 'candid' person shot. The angle enabled me to get a really relaxed shot without worrying if the subject could see me taking the shot.
No Worries B&W

2) PLACE. This shot was taken at FreshwaterWest beach. A popular place for surfers, although I've never figured out why, as I've never seen particularly big waves there. It's also popular with movie-makers. Ridley Scott filmed scenes for his Robin Hood remake there, and some scenes for one of the Harry Potter movies was also filmed here.
Surf Glow B&W

3) THING. This shot of a seagull sunbathing was the first good shot of a bird I ever took. It has also caused some confusion because of the distorted reflection. That's because he's resting on the roof of a car!! LOL.
Keepin' Watch B&W

  4. Three awesome B&W shots, Mitch! Love the candid photo. The book, the cigarette, the sunshine, altogether make a nice composition. Well, the sunbath of the seagull is my favourite. You captured the bird from such an angle that gives the illusion that it's much bigger in size than the building in the background.

    1. Thanks Belita :-)) Yes, the angle of the gull shot is such that it looks like he would crush a building it he sat in it!! LOL.

    1. Thanks Sophie :-)) That seagull photo has confused quite a few people over the years. I guess it's a combination of angle, distorted reflection and background.

  6. Hi, Mitch, what a fabulous and unique angle on your first shot. The relaxed pose, the cigarette, the book all make this one of my favorite shots of yours. FreshwaterWest beach looks like my kind of place and I have to love the seagull. Looks like he is big enough to eat a beach goer or two.

    1. Thanks Benni :-)) The place where I took that first shot is a small seaside town called Tenby. There are terraces set at different levels, with gardens and benches on each. I looked over the wall of the top terrace and saw this guy on a bench on the terrace below. It was just a perfect 'candid' moment.

  7. All three of these are fantastic, Mitch! I love the first one, taken on the sly. You have a good eye for people shots. I love the whole attitude you captured it.Interesting bracelet he's wearing. Makes me think he's an old hippie.

I think the surfing photo is my favorite. It looks like a good place to learn to surf! I love the sparkling water.

I remember the seagull shot. It looks larger than life! Great capture!

    1. Thanks Debby :-)) Yes, I think you're right about the guy in the first shot being an ageing hippy.

  8. Love your first candid shot - wonder if that bloke would be happy if he knew. I like the ligh reflections on the second. The third is a hit. I thought it was one of those plastic birds to blow up at first. What an angle that was and what a shot.

    1. Thanks Pat :-)) Actually, I don't think the guy would have minded too much, he seemed like a fairly laid-back sort.

Those gulls can grow to quite a size, and if there's food around they will gang up on you.

  9. Mitch, I love your candid shot over the man's shoulders. He seems to be enjoying his solitude. You titled it appropriately - No Worries. The scene at the beach is done well in black and white.Love the silohuetted surfers. There isn't any overexposure. The sea gull is a monster! No, I think the way that you composed the shot makes him appear larger. Nice exposure to see the plumage on the bird. Gulls in the States are scavengers and they have become accustomed to scavenging food from unattended blankets.

    1. Thanks Robert :-)) The gulls here are pretty much the same. In most of the seaside towns around here you see signs requesting that the public don't feed the gulls.
