Picture This #215 ~ RED

Hi everyone!! This is Mitch, and I'll be your host for this week. Earlier in the year I decided it would be fun that on the weeks where I host the challenge, I would post themes based on the three primary colours: Green, Blue and Red. I posted the 'Green' theme in early summer and there was a good response. More recently I posted 'Summertime Blue', which was another popular theme. So now here is the third primary colour: RED!!

When I thought about it, I realised that red is the least commonly found primary colour in nature. With green you can see fields, grass, trees....it's all over the place. Again, with blue.....the sky, the sea....there's a lot of blue. But with red, you have to look more carefully. With the exception, maybe, of a fiery sunset, red tends to be smaller in nature......red flowers or red birds, for example. A lot of the red we do see around us usually comes from human-made things.

So, lets see your photos of 'red'....both natural, and human-made. Here are mine:

1) Fishing boat at Tenby harbour, left high and dry by the outgoing tide. Aground

2)  This parrot was having trouble staying awake in the Florida heat.

3) A lifeguard on duty at Saundersfoot beach. Baywatch, UK style!! LOL.

4) Bonus shot. You didn't really think I'd post 'red' without getting a red flower in here somewhere, did you??? LOL.

  1. Wow, Mitch, great theme. And I am so honored to have my "Bean" as the banner photo. Thank you.

I love red maybe, because as you say, it is not common in nature, especially in temperate zones. What a nice little boat up top! It's unusual to see a boat with a block wall behind it. Your parrot is superb with its sharp beak and wrinkled face. You've captured every feather. I like your life guard, good picture of a summer beach day.

And of course you needed to put in a red flower! What interests me about this one is the mathematical pattern of the center - I am sure there is a name for it - and, of course, the wonderful detail.

    1. Thanks Benni :-)) The harbour at Tenby has a really high sea-wall around it. At low tide it towers over the boats left on the floor of the harbour like this one. The parrot (and it's mate which you can just see a part of in the bottom left of the photo) were both dozing, so I could get right up close to them, didn't need to use zoom.

I'm fascinated by the patterns in the centres of many flowers. It's the main thing that attracted me to getting into flower-macro photography in the first place.

  2. Thanks, Mitch, for the red theme. You know how red is my favourite colour! Nice boat having rest. Fantastic shot of the parrot. Was he dreaming about a female parrot? Most probably, he was. Excellent shot of the lifeguard. He seems to be performing his professional job in a very efficient way. I would never believe you didn't post one of your fabulous macro shots. Love the colour of the scarlet flower. Excellent four shots, all are my favourites....

    1. Thanks Belita :-)) Well, I have seen red so many times on your page, I knew it had to be your favourite colour!!

The parrot's mate was sitting right next to him (you can see part of it in the lower left side of the photo). so maybe dreaming of something else. Perhaps of his homeland? Saundersfoot beach is fairly sheltered and calm, even in rough weather, but it's still good to know the lifeguards are alert and on watch.

    1. Thanks Danette :-)) The boat is one of a small fishing fleet that operates out of Tenby harbour. They fish the shallow coastal waters around Tenby and Saundersfoot.

  9. Mitch, these are four great shots for the theme. I can see how far the tide goes out by the height of the wall behind the boat. I like this shot. The parrot is beautiful. Very nice close up shot of the sleeping bird. So, this is Baywatch in the UK. LOL. The flower is lovely. What is the name of the flower?

    1. Thanks Robert :-)) Even at highest tide, the top of the sea-wall is about thirty feet above the water-level. I'm not too sure of the name of the flower. I took it last week at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. It was in a bed with several varieties of Dahlia, so I think it may be a cultivar variety of that genus. However there were some non-Dahlia plants in the same bed, so I can't be certain.

  10. They are all very good. The fishing boat is very unique. Do parrots sleep, I am sure he had his eye on you somehow wondering what you were doing with the camera. I would have preferred the front view of the Baywatch man, being me. Lovely red flower.

    1. Thanks Pat :-)) I'm pretty sure parrots do sleep. This one seemed totally oblivious to what was going on around it. Next time I see one of the lifeguards, I will ask if I can take a front shot 'for a friend in Switzerland' LOL.

  11. Wonderful shot of the boat, Mitch!

The bird is just beautiful! Amazing detail. It's beak is so pretty, sort of a marbleized look. This one is my fav!

Red is a very good color for a life guard. You can't miss him or his Yamaha!

Lovely flower. It was all I could do to NOT post a flower! : p
