Picture This #211 ~ Summertime Blue

Hi everyone, this is Mitch. I'll be your host this week. Before we get to this week's theme, just a word of thanks to Pat for suggesting I use one of my own photos for the banner this week, and to all those who seconded the thought. I decided to use one I posted a few challenges ago, it seemed quite popular going by the comments it got.

So what is this week's theme?? Well, basically it's BLUE. Or, to be more exact.....Summertime Blue!! Some folks think that blue is a 'cold' colour, but to me it brings thoughts of summer. Blue skies, blue sea, blue flowers, blue butterflies........you name it, there's lots of blue around in the summer. So.......show me your summertime blue!!!

  1. I am so happy you chose one of my favorite of your pictures! Great theme and pictures too. That poppy is amazing. I have never seen a blue one and the way it is seen in the light is very delicate and lovely. In contrast the sturdy blue sculpture against the blue sky. Finally your blue dragonfly, I have never seen one that color. The detail is fabulous. I like seeing it on the rough texture of the wood.

    1. Thanks Benni :-)) I got a lot of positive comments about that shot I used for the banner when I first posted it for a theme a few weeks ago, so decided I would use that one. That blue poppy is quite rare, here at least, so when I saw a group of them at Picton Castle Gardens, I took quite a few shots, but this was my favourite. The shot of the sculpture was taken in Poole Harbour when Joanne and I visited Baz a couple of summers ago. Those damselflies are very common here, there are lots of them around in summer. I shot this one last week.

  3. Good Morning, Mitch, from a very tired bleary eyed ME. Sorry for not being around this last week, a lot has been going on here and have been very busy.
Wonderful theme, will have to look for my wintertime blues, we did blue not long ago, so must look in archives for something different. I like your banner, very very nice, thank you Pat for that idea. I missed that suggestion too.................. Can I still post my children, they are ready in Flickr waiting to come out to play. Could not post last weekend as had my friends grandchildren here, boys of 8 and 10 are very demanding , not a second to myself.

Winter has finally caught us with a vengeance. Russell went away fishing, came back with a tummy bug. I was home alone with a friend to watch over me ........... this needs a blog actually, but doubt anyone would care really LOL

    1. Hi Marianne. Sorry to hear things have been hectic there. Hope you and Russ are feeling better now and everything is back on track.

I did check to see if/when blue last featured in a theme, that was six months ago and was non-specific. This is specifically SUMMERTIME blue. So please, summer photos of blue.

I'll look out for your blog about what has been happening.

  4. Congratulations on the wonderful banner picture. Really something unique.

The blue poppy is something out of the ordinary, a wonderful capture. Good shot of the blue sculpture competing with the blue sky. We do not get damselflies so much here, but most of our dragon flies are blue Very good details on the fly.

    1. Thanks Pat :-)) That ripple-reflection shot of the reeds is one of my own personal favourites.

It's quite rare to see blue poppies here in Wales, I was so happy to see some on my recent visit to Picton Castle Gardens. I usually get some blue dragonflies here as well as the damselflies, but this year there are very few dragonflies around.

  6. Well, no words can express the super choice for the banner... super, super!
Excellent shots on the theme. I admit my ignorance, I didn't know there were blue poppies. What a beautiful one! Very interesting sculpture and its name is so appropriate... Fabulous shot of the blue damselfly... what a wonderful wings detail!

    1. Thanks Belita :-)) The blue poppies are quite rare here in the UK, I don't know if they are more numerous in other places. I had to sneak up on the damselfly while he was having a rest.

I have never heard of a damsel fly, it does look a bit different than a dragon fly...very colorful!
The sculpture looks pretty against the blue sky.
The poppy is my favorite...love the lighting and what a delicate shade of blue :)

    1. Thanks Danette :-)) Damselflies are related to dragonflies. They are generally much smaller than dragonflies, with narrower thorax and abdomen. The blue variety are very common here. Near pools and lakes in summer there can be hundreds of them flitting about. The blue poppy is one of my own fave shots of 2013 so far.

  9. Mitch, this is a great theme for our challenge.
Your blue poppy is wonderfully done. What works best for me is the contrast of the filtered light through the flower against the dark background. The sculpture is interesting. The photo of the damsel fly has a lot of detail in it. Wonderfully done!
