Picture This #279 ~ Wood

Congratulations to you, Baz, on your majestic photograph of the morning sun. Truly inspirational for our banner.

I like the theme of wood; I live in on a wooded lot and the trees seem alive to me and wood seems like an almost sacred thing.

Squirrel house
My husband made this for the birds, but squirrels moved in and ate the perch and made other modifications.

Pine bud
New growth from an old Norfolk pine in Florida.

Chair
Also from Florida, an old chair, no longer usable without some work, in the shade of a palm tree.

Hollow tree
This is major wood. My neighbor came to me about this 180-year-old red oak which spread out over our property line. Heavy limbs grew over his house and he called an arborist because it was leaning. The arborist found evidence of root rot and predicted the tree could fall over, so, sadly, we had it cut down. Sure enough the core was hollow and I could get my arm into it at least this far. Probably farther, but it was difficult to hold the camera up and shoot with one arm while the other was in the tree. Plus it was a little scary. The stump here is under a meter high and I could get my arm all the way in and still not touch bottom.

  2. HI Benni !! Great shots for the theme!! I love how the squirrels have modified the bird-house to their own requirements, cheeky little rascals. I like all the frozen water-droplets, too. I really like that tiny bit of verdant green emerging from the gnarled old trunk of the pine. Nice chair in the third shot, just needs a little TLC. Wow, you can see in that last shot why the tree was in trouble. That's some damage to the central trunk!!

    1. Thanks, Mitch. This was a theme I woodn't do without! Yeah, the last shot is almost scary because I could tell the damage was not just to the trunk, but to the taproot.

  4. Beware the squirrels, they are moving in, good photo. The growth from the pine cone is fascinating. Interesting chair and the last photo is unique.

  6. Hi Benni! Fantastic shots I see on here... Squirrels were good architects, weren't they? Nice and fresh green of that pine sprout...interesting composition in the third shot and the last one, well, it shows your creativity...

    1. I think the last shot shows I am a bit of an idiot for sticking my hand so deeply in. (Laughling). Thank you for your kind words.

  7. Awwww, I love the squirrel house. I'm glad you didn't shoo them away.

The new branch is so bright and green and HOPEFUL!

Poor old chair. That's another thing that makes me sad. Old chairs, once loved, alone and in despair! Or so it seems ;) I wish I could rescue it!

And even sadder is the cutting down of the old tree. That's amazing and very brave, you sticking your arm in there...there might be SPIDERS! (shiver)

    1. Too cold for spiders!! And as for the squirrels, shooing them away would be tough. I am grateful they don't shoo us away. Florida is a great place for antiques, even broken ones. Lotsa retired men (and women) looking for a project

      Thanks for commenting!!
